Counter-Signals editor Alan Smart and Humboldt Area Peoples Archive (HAPA) co-founder Scott Holmquist explore the Humboldt region’s complex legacy of pre-legal back-to-the-lander cannabis cultivation, entrepreneurship and ecological idealism. They interrogate how these have intersected with revolutionary aspirations, capitalist drives, and cannabis criminalization—shedding light on the ambiguous and often paradoxical nature of “green” living in Humboldt, and offering a powerful look at Humboldt’s green legacy and broader significance in global conversations around land, labor, and liberation.
