Redwood Invasive Plant Eradicators Event

When: Saturday June 21, 9 AM – 2 PM
Meeting Place: Cooper Gulch Park parking lot, Eureka CA
Duration: 9 AM to 2 PM, come late, leave early, it’s up to you. We will be here for five hours to allow for different “shifts” of workers.
Activity Description: 1) girdling fruiting ivy on trees, and 2) cutting down & digging out English holly.
What to bring: we will have tools and safety equipment for everyone, but it helps us a lot if you bring your own. Bring thick long-sleeved clothing and water, and bring gloves if you have them.
Why This Matters: $5,000,000 was spent to revitalize the salmonid habitat in the streams that run through Cooper Gulch Park. This project involved digging the streams out, putting logs in place to provide shelter for the fish, and plant a narrow corridor of native plants around the stream. The next step is to clear the invasive ivy from the trees that surround this narrow corridor. If this isn’t done, the trees will soon die and no longer provide shade for the fish in the stream.
