Redwood Invasive Plant Eradicators @ Humboldt Area Foundation’s Lynn Vietor Nature Trail
Meeting Place: Parking lot of Lynn Vietor house, up on the hill. (For the September event, we met just inside the gate, but this time we’ll meet up on the hill.) Go to 373 Indianola Road (Eureka, CA, 95524). If you’re coming from the Indianola Cutoff, turn onto Indianola Road, and turn north onto the driveway going up the little hill to the Lynn Vietor house. You aren’t going to the parking lot to the Humboldt Area Foundation that can be seen from the Indianola Cutoff, you’re going further into the property up onto the hill.
Activity Description: 1) girdling ivy on trees, 2) cutting down & digging out English holly / cotoneaster, 3) maybe digging out some ground ivy and 4) taking out a few other invasive plants we noticed.
Importance of Event: more than 95% of the plants at this beautiful nature preserve are native. However, there is invasive ivy on trees and medium sized holly and cotoneaster trees are starting to colonize the area. Just a few events at this site will have a huge impact, we can (partially) nip the invasives here in the bud.
Lunch: Lunch will be provided at 1:00 PM after the event. If you are going, it would be great if you could let me know so we could get a head count.
What to bring: we will have tools and safety equipment for everyone, but it helps us a lot if you bring your own. Bring thick long-sleeved clothing and water, and bring gloves if you have them.
Kid Friendly? No, 18 and over only.
Bathrooms: There is access to a bathroom down the hill in the Humboldt Area Foundation offices for emergencies.
