Redwood Region Audubon Society’s Annual Banquet and Auction

D Street Neighborhood Center

Join Redwood Region Audubon Society for our Annual Banquet and Auction on Saturday, February 15th at 5:30 p.m. Dr. Frank Fogarty will present a talk entitled “Lewis’s Woodpecker: Conservation challenges for a unique fire-associated species.” Lewis’s Woodpecker is a decidedly atypical woodpecker. Known for their striking appearance and unusual behaviors, this species remains one of the most poorly understood bird species in the western U.S. Dr. Fogarty will discuss their unique habitat use, including their association with post-fire landscapes and complex migratory behavior. He will also discuss the conservation challenges surrounding Lewis’s Woodpecker and ongoing efforts to better understand and protect this species in a rapidly changing environment. Dr. Frank Fogarty is an Assistant Professor of Applied Avian Ecology in the Wildlife Department at Cal Poly Humboldt. His lab studies how potential disturbances, including wildfire, climate change, habitat fragmentation, timber harvest, and cattle grazing, interact with bird communities. Recently, his lab has begun working on the conservation and management of Lewis’s Woodpecker in Oregon. He is also interested in methodologies for evaluating occupancy and abundance, especially as it relates to the kinds of messy, realistic data that are used by wildlife professionals. The banquet will be at the Arcata D Street Neighborhood Center, 13th and D Streets. Social hour begins at 5:30 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $35 per person until February 8, when the price will rise to $50. To get a ticket send a check made out to RRAS to P.O.Box 1054, Eureka, CA 95502 or email gary@jacobycreek.net with “Banquet” in the subject line, or phone (707) 496-6581. The last day to make reservations is February 12th.
