Restoring Coastal Prairie Hike
Mattole Valley Community Center (Petrolia)
Join Sanctuary Forest and the Mattole Restoration Council on Saturday, June 22nd for a hike in Petrolia: Restoring Coastal Prairie. This tour/workshop will be led by Monica Scholey (MRC), Jennifer Wheeler (BLM) and Matt Cocking (NRCS). Participants will tour the MRC’s Native Plant Nursery and recent grassland restoration sites on Prosper Ridge. The tour will focus on the importance of coastal prairie habitat, techniques for native plant revegetation and mechanical strategies for restoring prairie. We will see native bunchgrasses in flower, coastal prairie in various stages of habitat succession and ecosystem responses to conifer and coyote brush removal. This hike is limited to 15 participants; please RSVP to reserve your spot. Meet at the Mattole Restoration Council’s Native Plant Nursery at 11am, or meet at the Sanctuary Forest office in Whitethorn at 9:15am to carpool to Petrolia. The hike will end at 3pm, with upriver participants expected to return to Whitethorn by 4:30pm. Bring lunch and water and dress for wind and sun.
