About “Rhythms of the Game”

Rhythms of the Game ImagesDescribed as the “common ground” between a sports and music event, this free celebration for players, athletes, music and sports fans of all ages, is made possible by the Mateel Community Center. Hosted by Dave Gluck and based on his best-selling / award winning book, Rhythms of the Game: The Link Between Musical and Athletic Performance, the presentation takes the audience on a journey from “good” to “great”. It features exclusive video footage of former New York Yankee Great/jazz guitarist, Bernie Williams, who along with Grammy-nominated producer, Bob Thomson, co-authored the book with Gluck. Williams speaks about how elite athletes and artists conquer their fears, embrace failure, and ultimately achieve extraordinary success. To demonstrate how various performance techniques and mindsets are applied to high-pressure situations, the presentation also includes video clips of famous plays on the diamond involving Williams, and his personal commentary. International musician, author and educator Dave Krull of “Rhythm and Brass” is also featured in the video portion of this presentation.

Some of the techniques Gluck talks about that help athletes and musicians achieve peak performance include achieving the Alpha brain state through meditation, positive visualization, owning a situation, centering, practice, reframing your perception, identifying controllable and uncontrollable factors and more.

The Garberviile Town Band is the “house band” for this MCC event, keeping the musical energy high with a Pep Rally opener and inviting players of all ages to learn and jam with them through Gluck’s two workshop sessions at 5pm and again at 7pm. Players will then be invited to join GTB for the Concert Jam at the end. Percussionists are especially encouraged to participate. Local musician/instructor, Andy Barnett of the Sprowel Creek Music Studio will have on hand a stash of hand percussion instruments and drums for sharing, courtesy of the Studio.

Schedule of the day…

5pm : Open Sports/Music Playshop for all ages. Young players/athletes invited.
6pm : Kick-off Pep Rally concert and Dinner
7pm : Interactive Lecture-Demonstration with video appearance by Bernie Williams (video @ 7:30 +/-)
8pm : Concert Jam with the Garberville Town Band (GTB), Dave, and guests (selected players from Playshop sitting in?)

“Dave’s approach rings true to me. What two professions get to play for a living? Musicians and athletes. There is so much in common: timing, focus, teamwork, physical skill. Getting all the players together seems only natural. and a real blast, I’m sure.” - Andy Barnett (Garberville Town Band)

Praise for Rhythms of the Game:

“Rhythms of the Game is entertaining, enlightening, and informative – a journey into the mystical world of greatness in sports and the arts.”
- Barry Green, author of The Inner Game of Music

“A book written with the sound and the silence of people who know by experience the rhythm of the right brain and its role in excellence. This book is not just about the marvels of the relationship between music and baseball; it is about the mysteries of human potential”.
- Tim Gallwey, author of The Inner Game of Tennis

“Rhythms of the Game is an interesting look at how preparing for sports has so many similarities to preparing to perform in the world of music. Bernie is proof that young people don’t need to give up on one dream to pursue another, and in fact, the training involved for both music and sports intertwine and help one another.”
- Cal Ripken, Jr., Baseball Hall of Famer

“Was Bernie Williams a musician trapped in a ballplayer’s body, or was it the other way around? Dave and Bob tapped into his mind and the three of them delivered a gem of a book.”
- Marty Appel, former New York Yankee public relations director and author of Munson, The Life and Death of a Yankee Captain
