River Otter Lecture

Arcata Marsh Interpretive Center

Join Jeff Black and his river otter team for a free presentation entitled “North Coast Otters: From Wildlife Art to Wildlife Science.” Their 1-hour talk is part of the First Wednesday Lecture Series sponsored by Friends of the Arcata Marsh. Besides being in person, it will be carried live on Zoom at https://humboldtstate.zoom.us/j/88248246788?pwd=AuQSlOmC4Zwkq4hzWctlzTySkjKyjY.1#success

Dr. Black and current Cal Poly Humboldt wildlife Master’s candidates will describe details of their fieldwork to determine overall river otter numbers in Humboldt Bay, as well as insights into river otter behavior (hunting, movements, and play) at the Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary and adjacent habitats. The river otter team includes Gina, Whitney, Tylor, Lily, and Charlotte.

Jeff has been teaching at Humboldt and learning from local wildlife since 1998. His research interests include conservation and management of waterfowl and wetland-dependent species and evolution of social behavior and mating systems. His research approach combines theory, experimentation, and long-term field studies, which often includes citizen science volunteers.
