Roland Rock and (from Portland) Coloring Electric Like
Roland Rock once upon a time according to Art Chantry “a little blast down memory lane. this is the cover art (by jacques moiterret, who also did psych posters in seattle back in the 1960’s) for ROLAND ROCK’s single “small town” b/w “heartbreak” from 1978 (on funhole records). that was also the very year that the first actually punk CLUB (The Bird) opened up in seattle. small punk bands and punk operators and DIY punk shows existed in seattle before this year (the telepaths, the girls, the feelies, the mentors, the s’nots, the moberleys, the miece, the tupperwares, even ze whiz kidz, etc.) but, VERY few actual records had been released. this was one of the first (i guess the actual very first seattle ‘punk’ record - ignoring the sonics, etc.- was by The S’nots). Roland Rock was a sort of halfway point between punk and ‘ROCK’ as it existed back then. they didn’t quite have the ‘fashion’ statement down (mustaches, shag haircuts here and there, tshirts and flaired jeans, etc.), but their sound roared with attitude and crude DIY anger. these folks were like a band that was avant guard at the time - the forefront of what was coming down the pike. these sorts of bands are ALWAYS worth a listen. you learn a lot from them. Coloring Electric Like:Portland-based Coloring Electric Like combines shoegaze rock with heavily effected guitar, synth-driven sounds and beats from trip-hop and industrial influences, and female lead vocals. Layers of guitar evoke the sounds of My Bloody Valentine, Lush, and Curve, while beats from multiple drum and synth loops have the drive and edge of Massive Attack and Nine Inch Nails. A backdrop of lush synth and strings is sublimely orchestral, and creates a large landscape of sound within which provocative female vocals reminiscent of Portishead and Sneaker Pimps intertwine. The duo produces a sound that is surprisingly big, with a haunting feel and danceable groove.
