Romain Virgo, Protoje, i-Kronik
The Mateel proudly welcomes three of the hottest Jamaican reggae artists alive - on one stage - on one hot night! Representing the new wave of young, up and coming reggae artists out of Jamaica, Mateel Community Center has added a touring triple reggae event to the February calendar with Romain Virgo, Protoje & Indiggnation, and i-Kronik coming up on Monday, February 24th. Beer and Wine will be available for over 21 attendees and the kitchen will support a local non-profit organization.
In 2007, Romain Virgo made history as the youngest contestant ever to win Digicel Rising Stars, Jamaica’s talent competition, at the age of 17. Since then, he’s kept the hits coming on Jamaican charts with his singles Can’t Sleep, and Wanna Go Home as well as his album, Love Doctor, while still doing a five-year bachelor’s degree in performance at the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts in Kingston, studying for a major in voice and minor in keyboard. With hard work, Romain is taking it one step at a time working with Donovan Germain of Penthouse Music and Darwin Brown of Vikings Sounds.
There is an exciting resurgence of conscious organic music in Jamaica, and fans as well as industry experts seem to agree that Protoje is among those at the forefront of the movement known as the “Reggae Revival”. Leading the militant band - Indiggnation - the powerful songwriter and philosophical thinker articulates the righteous anger of an emerging generation, re-establishing the standard for the decaying art of socially responsible, mentally stimulating lyricism. On his album, The Seven Year Itch, the tune, Rasta Love, featuring KyMani Marley was his first international hit which accrued over 10 million Youtube views. In February of last year, two years after the proverbial itch was scratched, Protoje unveiled his album The 8 Year Affair. Since then, after performing at a few festivals in the states, Proteje & Indiggnation have been touring their Roots Rock Reggae’s message of uplifting consciousness throughout Europe and beyond. Indiggnation’s dub/rock-meets-reggae-fusion forms the signature sound and creaste a fitting background for Proteje’s equally potent lyrics.
i-Kronik represents the future of the “classic” reggae band. With years of experience playing on the largest stages worldwide, i-Kronik has emerged from the lineage of GUMPTION Band, one of reggae’s most consistent and talented backing bands and has shared the stage with too many greats to name including six years touring and recording exclusively with the legendary Beres Hammond. Some of the others they’ve played with include Dennis Brown, Freddie McGregor, Barrington Levy, John Holt, Luciano, CoCo T, Barrington Levy, Marcia Griffiths, Judy Mowat, Chakademus & Pliers, Richie Spice, Queen Ifrica, Diana King, Lady Saw, Maxi Priest, Wailing Souls and The Abasynians, among others. Their style and musicianship attract a wide cross-section of fans producing a sound that can’t be pigeonholed into one aspect of the genre.
