Sand Casting Workshop

Phosphene

In this hands-on, three-hour workshop, with Tova Lund, you’ll learn the fundamentals of sand casting.

We’ll begin by discussing what makes a good object for casting and how to prepare a
successful mold. You’ll learn how to pack the sand, create gates and vents, and safely
melt and cast metal into a mold. We’ll briefly cover cleanup and finishing techniques, but
our main focus will remain on the molding and casting process.

Sand casting is a fun, quick, casting method, but it is not always precise or perfect.
Expect some texture and variation and bring the spirit of experimentation and play.

What to Cast: I will provide various wax models and natural/found objects to share, but
participants are also encourages to bring a few small objects to explore. I will send out
additional details for how to select objects to participants upon registration.

Materials: Materials are provided. There will be some bronze for students to practice
with, but if you have your own silver casting grain or silver scrap you want to try, you can
bring that along too.
