Sea Level Rise Lecture

Baywood Golf and Country Club

PRESS RELEASE

Jennifer Marlow, J. D., Associate Professor of Environmental Law at Cal Poly Humboldt, will present a lecture entitled “Managing Risk from Sea-Level Rise to Humboldt Bay’s Spent Nuclear Fuel Site.” The talk will discuss plausible futures and recommendations for the spent nuclear fuel site. This event is part of the Retired Faculty and Staff Association luncheon series at Cal Poly Humboldt, or ERFSA.

Jennifer Marlow joined the faculty at Humboldt most recently from Alaska, where she supported litigation, community lawyering, non-profit community organizing, design, scenario planning, social art, entrepreneurship, and conflict resolution to advance climate and environmental justice. She has provided legal counsel to nonprofits, community groups, and other clients on regulatory compliance, environmental, climate, administrative, and constitutional matters. Her work on the 44 Feet Project was inspired by the work of retired sea level rise planner, Aldaron Laird, in his call for members of the Humboldt community to elevate local knowledge and examine the potential risks of climate and coastal hazards to the spent nuclear fuel site on Buhner Point in Humboldt Bay. Her work on the 44 Feet Project has convened Tribal, community, nonprofit, academic, industry, government, and elected officials to discuss ways to responsibly manage the stored nuclear waste long-term in light of impending changes to the site. For more details on the project, see 44feetproject.com. The project has received funding from CA Sea Grant, CSU Coast, and the National Science Foundation.

All in-person guests at these lectures should be fully COVID-19 vaccinated and may wear masks while attending. Meet and greets begin at 11:30 a.m. Various foods and beverages can be ordered for lunch from Baywood’s regular menu; please arrive early to order lunch. The presentation will commence at noon. The public is invited to these presentations; you need not be retired, a member of Humboldt ERFSA, or purchase lunch. The ERFSA lecture series is open to the entire North Coast community. If you are retired faculty or staff of Cal Poly Humboldt, please consider joining our organization. Find more information at erfsa.humboldt.edu.
