Searching for Life in the Drag Universe
The ball scene can be traced back to the Harlem Renaissance and communities of color. Drag balls are still carried out in the east coast, sometimes in very large scale fashion.
A Ball is a drag themed runway competition with categories. Contestants may or may not choose to dress in drag. Others may choose to not only dress up, but give a performance in what it means to perform gender. Either way, all are welcome to participate in drag balls.

Categories will include: Cosplay, Superhero, Lumberjack Realness, Body Positivity, Military, Gender Fuck, and Tailor Made. SEE DESCRIPTIONS BELOW.
Gender Fuck- Contestants will showcase their expression of gender. Contestants can show us what it means to THEM to be a boy or a girl.
Body positivity/sexy- This category focuses on body positivity. We are looking for all kinds of people that can show us that sexy is not about asthetics. It’s about attitude…. it’s about swagger…. Contestants are encouraged to showcase to us what it means to be sexy and come dressed in what ever they feel is appropriate ;)
lumberjack Realness- Contestants should come through drawing inspiration from our Lumberjack mascot. Think Paul Bunyan meets Humboldt State meets RuPaul’s Drag Race. A performance with someone chopping wood would probably steal the show….. just saying…..
Cosplay- Contestants in this category will have the opportunity to come in as any character from a work of fiction. Characters from anime, comic books, movies, books…. maybe even from your OWN imagination!
Drag Performance- No event would be complete with out a drag performance. Humboldt county has a very diverse drag scene, and in this category we will be able to see all the unique performances that our talented kings and queens possess. Contestants in this category include those that want to perform gender along with a lip sync, skit or other performance.
Military Realness- A popular category in many balls, the military realness category gives people an opportunity to come dressed as military personnel.
Tailor Made- This category is for our fashion savvy contestants. This category will give those with an eye for fashion or those with the gift of tailoring their own costumes, to showcase their pieces. On stage costume changes and sequin gowns are encouraged =P
