Shabbat Shira: Sabbath of Song

Temple Beth El

Temple Beth El will hold its annual Shabbat Shira (Sabbath of Song) Rabbi Naomi Steinberg will be joined by tenor soloist Berel Steinberg and the Temple Choir, with piano accompanist Jerryl Lynn Rubin. Shabbat Shira is named for the traditional readings of the day. In the yearly Torah-reading cycle, this week’s portion contains Shirat HaYam, the “Song of the Sea,” a prayer of gratitude and thanksgiving chanted by the Children of Israel after safely crossing the Sea of Reeds. An additional reading contains the “Song of Deborah,” in which the prophetess leads the people in another song of liberation. Rabbi Steinberg will speak on themes of peace and justice. Rabbi Wayne Dosick, in his book, Living Judaism, writes that “in modern times, Shabbat Shira has become an occasion to celebrate the beauty of Jewish music and its central and powerful place in Jewish life.” The chorus will perform an array of beautiful Jewish music, drawing on passages from the Hebrew Bible, medieval and modern compositions. The choir and soloist will debut a new piece by Rabbi Steinberg based on words of the prophet Amos, famously quoted by Dr. Martin Luther King: “Let justice roll down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream.”
