Sin in Soft Focus: I Am a Fugitive From a Chain Gang (1932)
The Humboldt County Library - Based on the Book Film Series returns, featuring four classic movies from Hollywood’s Pre-Code Era—that startling and provocative five-year period between the advent of talkies in 1929 and the buzzkilling Puritanism of 1934 and beyond.
The series kicks off with I AM A FUGITIVE FROM A CHAIN GANG (based on the true life story and book by Robert E. Burns).
A down-on-his-luck veteran (Paul Muni), just back from World War I, is unjustly convicted of a crime and sentenced to 10 years of bruisingly unfair treatment on a chain gang. Even after he escapes and builds a new, respectable existence, his freedom and happiness are threatened when his scheming landlady (Glenda Farrell) discovers his secret and threatens to blackmail him.
