Sin in Soft Focus: Little Caesar (1931)

See Event Description

The Humboldt County Library - Based on the Book Film Series returns, featuring four classic movies from Hollywood’s Pre-Code Era—that startling and provocative five-year period between the advent of talkies in 1929 and the buzzkilling Puritanism of 1934 and beyond.

The series continues with LITTLE CAESAR (based on the novel by William R. Burnett)

Ambitious career-criminal Rico (Edward G. Robinson) abandons small-time holdups to chase his fortune in the big city, an act that ultimately brings him into conflict with his more straight-laced partner (Douglas Fairbanks, Jr.). Rico’s desperate quest for respect, power, and status drives him to the top of the underworld but, of course, also precipitates his tragic and inevitable fall.

Starring Edward G. Robinson, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. and Glenda Farrell. Directed by Mervyn LeRoy.

(1931 / b&w / 79 min.)

Hosted by Michael Cooley.
