Sin in Soft Focus: Shanghai Express (1932)
The Humboldt County Library - Based on the Book Film Series returns, featuring four classic movies from Hollywood’s Pre-Code Era—that startling and provocative five-year period between the advent of talkies in 1929 and the buzzkilling Puritanism of 1934 and beyond.
The series continues with SHANGHAI EXPRESS (based on a story by Harry Hervey)
A diverse group of passengers is traveling by express train from Peking to Shanghai. Among them is Captain Doc Harvey (Clive Brook), who finds himself reunited with his former lover, now an infamous adventuress who calls herself Shanghai Lily (Marlene Dietrich). Desire and deception follow, culminating in a tense hostage situation when their train is hijacked by a Chinese warlord.
Starring Marlene Dietrich, Clive Brook and Anna May Wong. Directed by Josef von Sternberg.
(1932 / b&w / 80 min.)
