SoHum Beer Fest and Barbecue Smoke-off

Mateel Community Center

Attention anyone who’s ever been told, “This is so delicious you should enter it into a contest!!!” regarding your barbequed meat, seafood or veggies or your home brewed beer. It’s stiff competition in the backyard barbeque and home brewed beer circuit, but who knows, you may just brew the best or “make the cut” er, so to speak!

Bad puns aside, Sunday, September 1st, the Mateel Community Center in Redway will present the 5th annual SoHum Beer Fest & BBQ Smoke Off, a beer and BBQ competition with live music!

Fast becoming a favorite, summertime event in southern Humboldt, barbeque and beer lovers will agree that when grill masters, home brewers, and local breweries come together in one place to test their skills, that’s the place to be! The “job” of the audience is to taste their delectable offerings and cast your secret vote. How sweet is that? Prizes and bragging rights are awarded to audience favorites in all categories.

Those interested in being a BBQ or brew contestant should call or come by the Mateel office at 923-3368. BBQ contestants must provide their own BBQ, ingredients, and serving utensils, plus make enough of their dish to offer samplers to a crowd of about 300 people.  Home brewers must provide keg or bottled beer samples (also to a crowd of 300) and are responsible for serving their product during the event.

All BBQ and brew contestants will receive two free passes to the event in exchange for their participation, plus get the chance to win some great BBQ and beer related prizes, as well as a plaque to commemorate their victory. Winners of the BBQ competition will also receive a cash award this year to help offset the expense of their ingredients.

Doors open at 4pm and the fun starts immediately with BBQ samplers, beer tasters, and live music by Aloha Radio and Rooster McClintock. Complimentary BBQ samplers and a free plate of sides are offered to all event attendees and will be served throughout the day until gone.  Those purchasing the beer ticket will receive a commemorative tasting glass and unlimited tasters of local favorites and specialty brews by most of the breweries in Humboldt and Mendocino Counties (and a few from beyond), plus an array of offerings by local home brewers.

Schedule entertainment includes Aloha Radio with special guests Rooster McClintock…
