Folklife Festival Songwriters Night

Carlo Theatre (Dell’Arte)

Join Jan Bramlett, Dominic Romano, Sam Whitlach and Paul Turner for an intimate evening of music in Dell’Arte’s Carlo Theater. Doors open at 7pm. Show starts at 7:30.

Jan Bramlett brings a light touch to profound subject matter, blending wry humor with deep insight into human nature. Her strong, bluesy voice sweeps through lyrical melodies that grab your attention and touch your heart. While her solo sound is “folky,” her songs show a broad range of styles from blues to rock and roll, to quiet heartfelt ballads to a more jazzy feel, particularly when she is playing with a full band. Bramlett has been singing and writing songs for years, but she really began performing her originals after she moved to Arcata in 2008. She has co-produced a local Joni Mitchell Tribute Show three years in a row, and has opened for Bay area band Blame Sally at the Arcata Playhouse and troubadour Casey Neill. She hopes to get back into the Tim Gray’s studio this fall to continue her current recording project.

Dominic Romano grew up in a musical world, fiercely supported by those all around him. He started playing Suzuki method violin at six years old, but quickly being swept away by the sounds of Celtic and American fiddle and folk music. At fourteen he picked up and taught himself how to play guitar and started writing his own music as a way of self-expression. Dominic graduated from Bennington College with a B.A. in Recording Arts and Sound Design. His music has stylistic breadth and depth to it, spanning multiple genres including folk, pop, singer-songwriter, and bluegrass; his sound is a blend of old and new with thoughtful lyrics that are supported by very catchy melodies.

Sam Whitlach is a folk songwriter, and has been performing in Humboldt for the past 8 years. Raised in the high desert of Tehachapi, CA, Sam graduated from HSU in 2007 and has been performing in the area since then. Now a worker in the farming community, Sam writes, sings, and waxes on about life in Northern California and beyond. His performances are largely comprised of original material. He often plays as a solo act, but does occasionally play with a small ensemble for a larger sound.

Paul Turner has been a guitarist and singer-songwriter most of his life. His style ranges from contemporary folk to jazz. He weave a sensual journey of love and compassion interlaced with crosspicking guitar.
