Stand Up, Speak Out to End Trafficking
The dark shadows of sex trafficking reach into Humboldt County and impact the local community. Girl Scout Ambassador Adeline Esh wants to shed some light on this global issue for local middle and high school students at the Stand Up, Speak Out event she has organized for April 3rd at Dows Prairie Grange in McKinleyville beginning at 6 pm. The event is meant to empower youth communities to end trafficking and educate them so they know the red flags to avoid trafficking or domestic violence situations.
The event begins at 6 p.m. with pizza and Girl Scout cookies for participants. Resource tables from the Humboldt Domestic Violence shelter and other related organizations will be available. Survivors will speak at 6:30 p.m. At the end of the presentations, there will be time for questions or further access to resources. Participants are encouraged to bring hygiene items to donate to a local women’s shelter. The event lasts until 8:30 pm.
As part of her Gold Award project, Adeline has worked with survivors and mentors to develop a deeper understanding of how sex trafficking happens in communities across the country. In addition to the April event, she is planning another at College of the Redwoods and working to build an awareness campaign for student clubs in high schools around Humboldt County. The Gold Award is the highest award a Girl Scout can earn and requires a substantial commitment of time and effort.
Partners in the event include Humboldt Against Trafficking, Humboldt Domestic Violence Shelter, Soroptimist International of Eureka, Dows Prairie Grange #505, Open Door Teen Clinic, and Redwood Service Unit Girl Scouts. This event is open to all middle and high school students and their parents. The event will deal with sensitive topics. For further information, contact speakoutagainsttrafficking@gmail.com
