State of NorCal Nonprofits Event and Survey Report

At 5:15 on Wednesday, November 12, NorCAN will host an important forum, The State of the Nonprofit Sector at the Eureka Woman’s Club, 1531 J Street, in Eureka. This free, public forum will be facilitated by the League of Women Voters and includes a panel discussion with nonprofit leaders addressing the findings from a recently released survey of nonprofit organizations serving Humboldt, Del Norte and Trinity Counties, “Federal Shifts and Local Impacts, Part II: Realities and Expectations for Rural Nonprofits”. Community members are encouraged to attend and leave inspired to support and advocate for the future of the local nonprofit sector (see list of nonprofit leader panelists below). Access Humboldt will post a video of the Forum on their channel and on YouTube.

The survey was conducted to examine how the convergence of budget cuts initiated in early 2025 at the federal level and expanded in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) are impacting nonprofit organizations and the services they provide. Findings from the survey reveal that nonprofits are facing multiple, overlapping pressures. To date, organizations have reported $6.86 million in collective funding losses, an additional $2.13 million in delayed reimbursements, and programmatic contractions that have resulted in 33 programs being reduced or eliminated. The most severely impacted groups are low-income individuals, youth, and families. The report also quantifies the expanding need for services in light of the budget cuts, and the challenge it creates for nonprofit leaders navigating the current financial and political landscape.
