Sunday Jazz

Morris Graves Museum of Art

Join the Humboldt Arts Council in the Morris Graves Museum of Art for Third Sunday Jazz Jam, featuring Stephen Smith, Sunday, September 15 from 2 to 4:30 p.m.

An Arcata native, Stephen Smith grew up literally surrounded by music, attending C.E.S., the grade school once located near the HSU Music Department where his father, Dave Smith, was the Music Department chairman. After a rough start in the public school system, Steve attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he received a degree in Arranging. Since then, Steve has demonstrated that he is as versatile as they come. His various groups have opened for Chick Corea’s Akoustik Band, Allan Holdsworth, Doc Severinson, Tower of Power, Kenny Loggins, and John Hammond Jr., and he has performed with the likes of Steve Allen, Bo Diddley, Jimmy Haslip and Will Kennedy (Yellowjackets), Tower of Power, and even had Hal Linden and Jackie Cooper Jr. sit in on a gig! Steve has also toured internationally with the Dell’ Arte Players, for multiple award winning shows. After 23 years in San Diego, Steve is back in Humboldt County after raising two beautiful children, and sharing his music in a variety of venues.

Stephen is joined by Ken Lawrence on bass, Francis Vanek on saxophone, and Michael Curran on drums and percussion. Join Stephen Smith for an afternoon acoustic and electric jazz performance followed by an open jam session; there is a $5 requested donation at the door.

The Humboldt Arts Council thanks the Jazz Jam sponsors: Lewis & Lucy Quinby, Philip & Sally Arnot, and Planet Chai. For more information about this and other Humboldt Arts Council Programs: www.humboldtarts.org.
