The Crack of the Butterfly’s Tongue

Humboldt Unitarian Universalist Fellowship

The world premiere of the one-man show The Crack of the Butterfly’s Tongue will open on June 10, 7 p.m. and June 11, 3 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Bayside, written and performed by Ryan McCutchan, directed by John Heckel. The show opens with a Scottish Mason lovingly courting stones in a mythical quarry of dreams and stories. The audience is transported to an era-less place where stones can speak and poetry dribbles out of hidden springs in craggy scars of our unearthed origins. The story of an Irish boy emerges from one such stone. We witness a humorous and shocking transformation at the stone auction block as the audience bids on the pieces of the boy’s body. We are then led through the exciting adventure of the boys transportation, sale, bondage, and subsequent escape from a Virginia plantation. The show questions many historical assumptions about slavery, cultural identity, sex & spirituality, race, dept, home, metaphor, and our relationship to past and future. The show features deft character changes, fountains of poetry, and the adroit display of wit, balance, song, irony, stone setting, and bullwhip SONIC BOOMS. Inspiration for the play began in part at a local quarry where McCutchan, owner of Humboldt Hearthstones Masonry, actually does collect his stone. McCutchan began working with director John Heckel in january 2016 to develop dreams, poetry, Irish slavery, and an unearthed inner multiplicity into a longer script for the stage. Heckel is an artist of life, has a Phd in Jungian Psychology, has directed hundreds of plays, is a Holocaust scholar, and long time Prof of Theater at Humboldt State University. He has been a creative mentor for many artists throughout Humboldt county and the world. The show runs a little over an hour followed by a facilitated discussion exploring the themes of the play. Advance tickets are available at Wildberries, your ticket market of choice, for $11. Tickets at the door will be $12.
