The Mammy Project

Dell’Arte’s Carlo Theatre

Creator Michelle Matlock performs a series of monologues that delve into the profound influence of the icon, stereotype, and myth of “Mammy” on contemporary American culture. This project intertwines the untold history of Nancy Green, the first African-American woman hired to portray “Aunt Jemima” at the 1893 World’s Fair, with the history of African-American activists like Ida B. Wells, who fought for authentic Black representation at that very same fair. Through original music, humor, storytelling, and historical speeches, The Mammy Project transforms an oppressive stereotype into a powerful celebration of the strength we gain from understanding and embracing our history.
