Trouble in River City!

Ferndale Repertory Theatre is thrilled to announce auditions for The Music Man, a classic musical filled with iconic songs, fast-talking charm, and heart.

This production of The Music Man will be a joyful, ensemble-driven celebration of community and connection, centered on what can happen when people choose to believe in one another. We’re approaching the story with care and curiosity, honoring its humor and heart while treating every character as fully human, invested, and essential to the world of River City. Collaboration, specificity, and shared storytelling are at the center of this process, and we’re excited to welcome actors who want to build something meaningful together.

We’re looking for performers of all ages and experience levels — whether this is your first audition or your fiftieth.

Auditions are at Ferndale Repertory Theatre, 447 Main Street in Ferndale, CA.

Please attend one or both nights—choose the audition type that best suits you! Arrive at the posted start time (and if you’re running late, that’s okay too).

Monday, February 9 at 6:30 PM – Come-As-You-Are Auditions
These auditions are great for first-timers, young performers, or those seeking an ensemble role. No preparation needed! The music director and accompanist will teach you a song from the show. Our choreographer will teach you a short combination. We will do cold reads from the script

Tuesday, February 10 at 6:30 PM – Prepared Auditions
Bring up to 45 seconds (32 bars) of a musical theatre song that showcases your singing and storytelling. You are welcome to bring a song from the show or a song that matches the vocal styling of The Music Man. There will not be an accompanist present, so please bring a backing track (Bluetooth device available) or be prepared to sing a cappella. Our choreographer will teach you a short combination We will do cold reads from the script

Callbacks will be held on Sunday, February 22. Those invited will be contacted directly.

Please be prepared to fill out a conflict sheet at auditions (please be specific about scheduling conflicts throughout the rehearsal period).

We are looking for:

First-time performers
Experienced actors
Young performers ages 8–17
Adults and families excited to create theatre together
Roles range from leading adults to youth ensemble and townspeople — there is truly a place for everyone.

About the Show

The Music Man follows traveling salesman Harold Hill as he arrives in the small town of River City, Iowa, charming its residents with promises of a boys’ band, new instruments, and a brighter future. As the town rallies around the idea of music and possibility, Harold finds himself unexpectedly changed by the community he intended to fool.

Our production of The Music Man will be a joyful, ensemble-driven celebration of community and connection, centered on what can happen when people choose to believe in one another. We will treat River City as a living, breathing character—full of humor, contradictions, care, and collective energy, and explore how fear and hope move through a close-knit community side by side.

Rehearsal Schedule

Start Date: Monday, March 9, 2026
General Schedule: Monday – Friday evenings. Not all cast members will be called for every rehearsal.
Rehearsals in Eureka: March 9 through May 8, 2026
Rehearsals in Ferndale: May 11 through May 29, 2026
Adult Cast
Typical call time: 6:30 – 9:30 PM

Young Performer Ensemble (ages 8–12)
Typical call time: 6:00 – 7:30 PM

Once we move to Ferndale young performers may be called later—up to 9:30 PM—for select rehearsals.

Production Dates

May 29 through June 28, 2026 (5 weekend run)
Fridays at 7:30 PM | Saturdays and Sundays at 2:00 PM
