The Miniplex & Silver Current presents an evening of film and music:

Joris Postema’s THE SYSTEM is a compelling documentary about people who refuse to accept the status quo. Set against the backdrop of climate crisis, inequality, and political turmoil, the film follows a search for new forms of hope, imagination, and changeas we follow three passionate idealists who are each trying to make a difference in their own way: Henk Ovink, international water diplomat in New York; Pippi van Ommen, co-founder of Extinction Rebellion in Amsterdam; and Berlin-based climate activist and anti-fascist Tadzio Müller.

Award-winning director Joris Postema (Stop Filming Us) offers no simple answers in The System, but shows that change is possible – precisely through doubt, cooperation and imagination. Featuring an original soundtrack by Sonic Youth’s pioneering experimental rock guitarist Lee Ranaldo, the film takes you on a quest for hope in a world in transition. Because to change the system, we need each other.

Director Joris Postema: “Change doesn’t come from above, but from people who keep trying in spite of everything. I hope this film doesn’t just confront viewers, but also encourages them. That it helps them to feel what’s at stake – and what’s still possible. That in the stories of these three people, they recognize something of their own longing for justice, for connection, for a future. And that they come away strengthened by the knowledge that, even in a world that feels increasingly threatening, change is indeed still possible.”

Starting at 7pm, before the film, there will be a special listening party for

Ranaldo’s soundtrack presented by Silver Current Records, including a chance to pick up the vinyl and other special edition items a week before the album’s official release.

On the soundtrack: “Ranaldo’s compositions are an exquisite flow of free and composed music showcasing his signature vision of melody and noise. The System original soundtrack functions both as a film score and a hallucinatory (mostly) instrumental guitar record. Much like the subjects of the film light the way toward intra-generational resistance, the music of The System reveals a path through gathering darkness.

“The gorgeous scope of Lee Ranaldo’s guitar palette is a perfect manifestation of the hope and despair that animates the film. But like other high-water marks in the guitar-centric soundtrack canon — the high plains raga of Bruce Langhorne’s Hired Hand, Neil Young’s sparse and ghostly solo transmissions on Dead Man, or the monolithic mantras of Popol Vuh’s Nosferatu — its devotion to spectral gestures and meditative song forms launches it firmly outside of the OST orbit into a universe fully its own.”

Listening party at 7pm in the bar and venue. The film will play at 8pm.
