The Yurok Tribe’s 53rd Annual Klamath Salmon Festival
The Yurok Tribe’s 53rd Annual Klamath Salmon Festival is on Saturday, August 22.
The theme of this year’s salmon celebration, which takes place in front of Redwood Hotel Casino, is Ecology Economy Community. The event starts at 7:30 a.m. with a Klamath Chamber of Commerce-sponsored Veterans Breakfast at the Klamath Community Center. The breakfast, free for veterans, is followed by a parade down Klamath Blvd. at 9:30 a.m.
“The purpose of the Salmon Festival is to bring people together and the Yurok Tribe would like to invite everyone to this awesome event,” said Thomas P. O’Rourke Sr.
Attendees of the family-centered, free event will have an opportunity to learn more about Yurok culture, dance to live music and shop for authentic handmade gifts from nearly 100 vendors. Also featured at the festival is a fun area for kids. As always, there is a delicious, traditionally cooked salmon feast. The ten dollar lunch includes a hunk of fresh salmon, homemade sides and a drink.
Into the Current is headlining this year’s Klamath Salmon Festival. Into the Current, fronted by Yaqui man Conor Handley, performs a beautiful blend of rock and reggae. The highly talented musicians weave Tribal instruments and a strong message into the easily danceable music.
The Salmon Festival’s “Classic Car Show”, organized by George and Marla Smoker, is in its sixth year and the array of classy automobiles is sure to be a hit with automobile enthusiasts. The Salmon Festival is also the venue for a highly competitive Stick Game Tournament and traditional Indian Card Game Tournament. The Yurok Tribe would like to thank LACO and Associates for sponsoring the Stick Game Tournament again this year.
The Veteran’s breakfast will start at 7:30 a.m. at the Klamath Community Center on Salmon Blvd. The breakfast will be followed by a parade at 9:30 a.m. The winners of the Noo-rey-o-won-ee (Beautiful girl inside and out)/Keet-ko (Strong/Able boy) Contest will be honored for their contribution to the community at 10:30. The famously delicious salmon lunch will start at 11:00 a.m. Into the Current will start at Noon.
While visiting the Yurok Reservation, don’t forget to check out the brand new Yurok Country Visitor’s Center and Yurok Discovery Park, which are both on the same street as the festival.
The Annual Tribal Membership meeting, for Tribal members only, is on Sunday, August 23. On Monday, August 24, award-winning actress and playwright, Anna Deavere Smith, best known for her role as ER Administrator Gloria Akalitus on the Showtime’s hit series Nurse Jackie, will present excerpts of her recent play, Notes from the Field: Doing Time in Education, The California Chapter. The free event, sponsored by the Yurok Tribal Court, is open to all and starts at 7 p.m. in the Community Room at Yurok Tribal headquarters in Klamath.
