Timbata

The Basement

TIMBATA is an eight-piece instrumental band performing Afro-Cuban-based dance music.

The band members are:
Gary Davidson (bass)
Tyler Hunt (timbales, pandeiro)
Howie Kaufman (steelpan, bongos, güiro)
Matt McClimon (keyboards)
Nick Moore (guitar)
Eugene Novotney (steelpan)
David Penalosa (congas)
Surya Sardonicus (drumset)

Several band members have played together in various groups for over 30 years. The name TIMBATA pays homage to the band’s musical roots by combining the name of the contemporary form of Cuban salsa known as TIMBA with the name of the drums widely used in Afro-Cuban folkloric sacred music, known as BATA. TIMBATA’s original arrangements are guided by Afro-Cuban folkloric rhythmic sensibilities while also drawing inspiration from the Diasporic music of Brazil, Trinidad, Mali, Zimbabwe, and the United States and pushing the contemporary boundaries of those genres.
