Tune-Yards’ Merrill Garbus

Kate Buchanan Room

Explore what it means to be a musical artist in the existing global political, social, and environmental climate with Merrill Garbus, the brainchild of the musical project Tune-Yards. With this year’s release of I Can Feel You Creep Into My Private Life, Merrill Garbus was acknowledged by NPR for piercing her own white privilege, which, is clearly reflected in the group’s new music. Using Garbus’ newest project that hyperlinks her new lyrics to their respected sources, we will discuss how we might use music to hold complex, multi-faceted ideas, how to use music to embolden, empower, and commune with each other, how white supremacy, whiteness, and cultural appropriation are reflected in the microcosm of the music industry…and lots more.
