Viewing of film “Trapped”

Humboldt Unitarian Universalist Fellowship

“Trapped” is a beautifully produced film which chronicles the recent forced closures of women’s health clinics in southern states. The title of the film stems from the TRAP (Targeted Regulations of Abortion Providers) laws, state legislative measures intended to circumvent current federal law by burdening clinics with expensive and unneeded requirements such as meeting the same standards as full surgical centers or requiring doctors who perform abortions to have admitting privileges at nearby hospitals. The American Medical Association and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists have argued that TRAP laws are medically unnecessary, since abortion is already a safe procedure in the United States. “Trapped” premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2016 and was awarded a special jury Social Impact prize. The thoughtful film includes poignant and informative interviews with clinic owners, doctors, and patients. The 80-minute film will be followed by discussion facilitated by HUUF minister, Bryan Jessup. Clergy for Choice is an interfaith group of local spiritual leaders dedicated to public education and advocacy on reproductive health issues.
