‘What’s Song Got to Do With It?’
Join the Redwood Region Audubon Society on Thursday, September 17, for a free talk exploring five decades of whale research entitled “What’s Song Got to Do With It? Megaptera Meets Troglodytes” by Jeff Jacobsen. Jeff first came to HSU (CalPoly Humboldt) in 1973 to study oceanography. A chance invitation in 1977 — a road trip to northern Vancouver Island to camp, launch a Zodiac, and look for killer whales — changed the course of his life. He went on to earn a Master’s degree in 1990, studying the social bonds within whale family groups and discovering along the way how the study of oceans naturally leads to the study of animal behavior. In this talk, Jeff will share what 50 years of photographic identification research has taught him about whales’ individual personalities —recognized by their natural markings in the brief moments they surface for air. He’ll also discuss the science of humpback whale song, an ongoing global study into the cultural lives of these long-living animals, and his work from 2006 to 2020 with Bio-Waves Inc., where he helped build and tow hydrophone arrays across the North Pacific and Gulf of Mexico to track cetaceans acoustically. Programs are held at the Six Rivers Masonic Lodge, 251 Bayside Road, Arcata.
