Women and Girls Birdwatching Trip

Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge

Join Redwood Region Audubon Society trip leaders Susan Penn and Susan O’Connor on Sunday, February 12, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. for our monthly Women and Girls birding trip. This month, we’ll adventure to the Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge and Loleta area. Meet at the Susans at the Hookton Slough Unit where we’ll start looking for grebes, ducks, pelicans, and shorebirds. We may see meadowlarks, swans, and surf scoters, too! From there we will drive towards Loleta, make a couple of stops to watch for raptors, and check ponds for freshwater-loving birds. We will circle back and end our day at the Hookton Slough Refuge. To get to the Hookton Slough Unit, take exit 696 off Highway 101. Northbound, turn left and go west over the overpass and take a right on Hookton Road. Follow the road about 1.2 miles and you will see the signed turn-off to the parking lot on your right. Southbound, go straight ahead from the off-ramp stop sign. Follow Hookton Road west about 1.2 miles, and take the signed turn-off down to the parking lot. Contact Susan Penn with questions susanpenn60[at]gmail.com.
