Yes! Jesters! No Amazon!
“Yes Jesters! No Amazon” brings community together for an evening that begins with dinner and some Dada-Italo Calvino-clown inspired Cabaret that will eventually end when a public meeting breaks out. All activities will center around what we can do to oppose corporate rule in Humboldt County, in particular, you guessed it, a certain monopolistic megacorporation that wants to build a warehouse in Mckinleyville.
Participants are invited to bring a blank T-shirt to be screen printed with the message: "Support Local Business-No Amazon Warehouse."
The Cabaret opens… on a stage… an actor is attempting to write a script for a play they hope will inspire a community to come together and defeat, against seemingly impossible odds, an exploitive corporation attempt to build a warehouse in their backyard… and suck the lifeblood from their local economy… but they’ve run out of time… the show is starting…
Expect clowns attempting to explain the economic effects of corporations on local economies, a dangerous orange snake that eats local businesses, an interactive contemplative juggling experience ( a metaphor for the way a community can help each other when there is just too much for any one person to juggle … whenever our hero struggles with writers block and the play grinds to a halt… expect amazing local poets, singers, and players of instruments to bail the beleagured playwright out… by jumping on stage and performing their own salient-to-the-evenings-theme pieces…
Featuring James Zeller, Katie Belknap and John Wood with special guest appearances to be announced.
The 45 minute show will be immediately followed with a brief planning meeting/creative invitation with organizers seeking community members to dream up ideas for demonstrations, brainstorm action items and fill specific roles with time commitments ranging from 30 minutes a week to longer (often very fun) commitments.
