Youth Art Exhibition Awards

A total of 25 Humboldt County high school artists are being honored Saturday (May 6) during Arts Alive! for work at 603 F St. in Eureka. Awards will be presented at 5 p.m. during a reception and the gallery will remain open until 9. The exhibition runs through May 12 and is open from noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday each week. Harlyn Fitzgerald of Mckinleyille High School won Best of show, the Dawn Luchessi Award of $150. The untitled piece is ceramic. Judge for the exhibition was Eureka sculptor Jack Sewell. The winners in each category receive $80, second place gets $50 and third place wins $30. Winners by category are: Painting: First, Sierra Bennett, Arcata, for an ink/watercolor titled, “Wonderwhale; Second, Melina Couhan, Fortuna, acrylic; Third, Sun Wenyi of St. Bernard’s, watercolor; Honorable Mention, Bridget Soriano, Eureka, tempera, Drawing: First, Camilla Montoya, Arcata, titled “Archeress,” graphite; Second, Sierra Bennett, Arcata, pen/ink; Third, Ashley Christina. Fortuna, pen/ink; Honorable Mention, Elizabeth Lopez , Fortuna, pen/ink. Pottery: First, Sean Wieman, Mckinleyvile, “Untitled,” clay; Second, Noah Johnston, Eureka, earthenware; Third, Anabelle Tsung, Eureka, earthenware; Honorable Mention, Camden Collins, McKinleyville, ceramic. Sculpture: First, Noah Ben-Tesa, Mckinleyville, titled “Mechanical Face, clay; Second, Michelle Lee, Eureka, earthenware; Third, Raymond Zhao, St. Bernard’s. ceramics; Honorable Mention, Miranda Campbell, Mckinleyville, ceramic. Digital Art: First, Jessica Hein, Fortuna ,titled, “Palm of Your Hands,” digital print; Second, Marissa Morrison, Fortuna, digital print; Third, Taylor Fournier, Fortuna, digital print; Honorable Mention, Janie Mendosa, Arcata, digital print. Photography: First, Mary Burns, Arcata, titled “Target, photography; Second, Kimberly Schmidt, Fortuna, photography; Third, Melanie Black, Fortuna, photography, Honorable Mention, Emily , Eureka, photography. A total of a 140 entries from students are included in the exhibition. Participating High schools are Mckinleyville, Arcata, Eureka, St. Bernards, Zoe Barnum, Fortuna, and South Fork.
