Humboldt Dockside Market — Our Local Farmer’s Market for Fish!
Humboldt — We are a fishing village and these ladies are reminding us of that!
Toby in the Morning got to sit down with the founding members of the Humboldt Dockside Market — Ashley Vellis of Ashley’s Seafood and Megan Kenney the Harvest Hub Director of the North Coast Growers Association — to discuss a long time dream realized.
This direct-to-consumer market mimics the structure of a Farmers’ Market: Humboldt-based fishing vessel owners set up canopies on Madaket Plaza every other Saturday from May to October and sell their catch to local and visiting customers.
While you may certainly purchase a whole fish to take home, you may also get your fish processed on site while they teach you the ins and outs of how to do this yourself, if you are so inclined. They will also suggest cooking instructions and recipes, and they even have samples. Weekly selections of course depend on what is being caught that day. Seasonal fish are the name of the game.
There are currently four more dates on the calendar through October, but might we see the market head into crab season? Listen to the interview below to find out!
What to know:
All of the vendors are Humboldt- based fishermen. You will be able to get your whole fish processed and wrapped at a station on site, and we keep the waste! We accept CalFresh/EBT
