Fiesta Folklórica: A celebration of Mexican culture through dance and music
This weekend, the Cal Poly Humboldt Department of Dance, Music, and Theatre presents the 4th annual “Fiesta Folklórica”, a celebration of Mexican culture through dance and music.Jacqueline Silva, Director, Choreographer and Elizabeth Rivera, Choreographer,Co-Production Manager sat down with KSLG DJ Sabina to discuss the impact of the concert on local community members, how far it’s come along in both scale and participation.
During a time when people fear retaliation for living their truth in their cultures, Fiesta Folklórica aims to be a concert that not only continues to be a safe space for the Latino community but also an opportunity for our Humboldt community to immerse themselves in the diverse styles of Mexican music and dance.
The event includes performances by dancers of Fiesta Folklórica, Danza Azteca, and Folklórico Ensemble, along with Mariachi de Humboldt.
“Fiesta Folklórica is a celebration of Mexican culture through music and traditional dancing. Each year, we aim to showcase dances from different regions of Mexico and its unique diversity from one another. Mariachi de Humboldt will also be showcasing various styles of Mexican music as well. Not only is this concert for our campus, but this concert is for our community. Especially during these uncertain times, we want a space for all to come and celebrate our cultural heritage.” -Director Jacqueline Silva
Fiesta Folklórica will take place at the John Van Duzer Theatre Friday, February 20th at 7:00pm, Saturday February 21st at 7:00pm, and Sunday February 22nd at 2:00pm.
