The Emerald Triangle cannabis industry attracts all types.
One of those types, perhaps over-represented in the rural areas, is the sociopathic shithead. This is the guy (or gal!) who is in the game for the meanest of reasons. They exude violent intent, rip up the land, care not at all for their neighbors or the culture and generally make life on the mountain miserable.
