RANKED CHOICE POLL! Let's Unofficially Name Eureka's Big New Metal Crab, Shall We?

“Here’s _______!”

Earlier this week, City of Eureka officials announced that they’d made an important investment in our community’s future: In their wisdom, they’d decided to pony up $13k for a giant used metal crab they intend to lug around to various events. What a time to be alive.

But with that exciting announcement also came an assignment for Eurekans (or, really, for anyone on the internet). This monstrosity is gonna need a name. Name this crab. Always reliable LoCO readers went right to work, digging deep to come up with many potential crustacean monikers. Too many, honestly. So let’s try and narrow this down.

LoCO combed through the various comment sections and came up with an unimpeachable list of ten (10) names that were either highly celebrated or we were just personally fond of in the hopes that we’d be able to poll our way into some sort of crab name consensus. (OK, we threw in one of of our own, too.)

Election denier? Time will tell.

We will point out that, as of yet, we’ve received no guarantee that the results of our badass poll will be binding. LoCO reached out to Eureka City Manager Miles Slattery in the hopes of getting official about this, but dude did not get back to us, which is lame. Perhaps once we launch this thing he will do the right thing and agree to abide by the will of the people. (It’s your legacy, bud.)

Because this is a very important issue — and also because it’s a Eureka issue — we are deploying our ranked choice voting system to ensure you get as much say in this matter as possible. If this is your first time using this system, all you have to do is drag and drop the crab names below into the order of how much you love them, and then wait for LoCO‘s magical election robots to do the rest. More choice is better!

We’re going to leave the polls open until next Friday, but may extend it if response is either overwhelming or underwhelming.

OK, we good? Great. Name that giant crab, Humboldt. Vote now!
