Depending on where you are in Humboldt, you might have already had some drizzle this Saturday afternoon and the wet weather is predicted to continue  for the rest of the weekend, possibly through Tuesday. 

“Are you ready for rain this weekend?” The National Weather Service tweeted on Saturday morning. “Rainfall totals from Saturday afternoon thru Tuesday morning are forecast to range from around a tenth of an inch in N Del Norte County to nearly 2” in Lake County. Ukiah is over 17” below normal for the year!”

So basically the wetness level will vary, depending on where you are and generally will increase the farther south you go. Currently Eureka is predicted to see about .44 inches, Fortuna will see around .68 inches and Garberville is looking at 1.04 inches over the next couple of days. 

This is good news for a dry year. So bundle up and enjoy it!

Gregory Frank Acorn (Greg, Corndog, Corn, Acorn) of Blue Lake, passed away September 4, 2022 after yet another courageous battle 30 years after his original spinal cord injury.

Born and raised in Blue Lake, Greg spent 20+ years in Steamboat Springs, Colo. before moving back to California, where he spent the last 25 years.

Greg’s love of being outdoors began at a young age fishing in Blue Lake with his grandfather Ira Acorn and shooting and hunting with Lee Iorg, a lifelong friend, and playing, swimming and water skiing in the rivers and lakes. His love of being active and outside continued in football and hang gliding. In Colorado he pursued snow skiing (downhill and telemark), snow boarding, rafting, jet skiing, camping, hunting both rifle and bow (deer and elk mostly), playing rugby and flying an ultralight. But when Greg found rugby he found a game he both enjoyed playing and watching and lifelong friends he loved and cherished.

Even when Greg could no longer participate in any of these sports his favorite place was always outdoors. Since he had elk and deer that frequent the property he was able to watch them and listen in the fall to the elk bugling and herding the girls around. He loved to see the bulls battle. He loved going to old car shows and the local casinos with his cousin Kevin. Most often he could be found in his garage puttering around on his ‘51 Chevy truck. Of course he had to watch the San Francisco Giants and 49ers. Anyone who knew Greg knew his love of dogs. He always had a dog(s).

Anyone who was privileged to be Greg’s friend knew they had a friend for life. He loved people and as he would say when he would call, ‘just bugging you. Brother Bill would say of Greg ‘he never met a stranger. Even in the hospital he was still making friends. As we know all of us had an extra 30 years with Greg on this earth.

Greg was proceeded in death by parents Eleanor and Robert, brother Raymond and cousin Bill. Survived by wife Audrey (and dog Ira); brother Bill (Lori); Nieces Raelyn and Dawn (Scott) and their children and grandchildren; Nephews Robert (Sarah) and Michael (Courtney) and their children; Aunts Sister Rosemarie, Lyn (Bob) and Nedra (Marty) and their children and grandchildren; Uncle Lonnie (Bonnie) and their children and grandchildren; cousins Bill’s wife Kathy, Jeannie, Ronie (Blue), Louie and Kevin (Toni) and their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Eureka Police Department press release: 

The subject depicted in the attached photos is considered a suspect in five separate battery/suspicious activity investigations by the Eureka Police Department. The five incidents have occurred sporadically since November 2021, with the most recent occurring on September 13, 2022.

Most of the incidents have occurred inside of major retail establishments while the most recent occurred outside on a residential sidewalk. In each incident the male follows a female victim for a period of time before approaching close enough to squirt the female with an unknown liquid substance. The male then quickly walks away.

The Eureka Police Department has been gathering information, surveillance, and has sent the substances off for DOJ testing. The motive behind the male’s action is still unclear. Detectives and Evidence Technicians believe it is possible there are unreported victims. Press release from the Humboldt County Drug Task Force:

Osuna

The Humboldt County Drug Task Force (HCDTF) has been investigating a large drug trafficking organization (DTO) in Humboldt County for approx. one year. Through their investigation agents identified the leader of the DTO to be Jose Santiago Lomeli Osuna (69 years old of Arcata). The investigation took several months as a result of Osuna using multiple vehicles, residences, storage units, and other methods to conceal the location of his narcotics. 

On Thursday September 15th, 2022 at approx. 1345 hrs. the HCDTF, with the assistance of the Fortuna Police Department POP Team (FOPD), and two FOPD K-9 Officers, made a traffic stop on Osuna at 4th St. & C St. in Eureka. Osuna was detained without incident. Agents served a search warrant on Osuna and located one ounce of fentanyl, two ounces of methamphetamine, and one gram of cocaine in Osuna’s jacket pocket. Osuna was placed under arrest. 

HCDTF Agents and FOPD Officers then served search warrants on 6 locations associated with the Osuna DTO. 

The first warrant was served on Osuna’s residence in the 1400 block of Creamery Row Alley in Arcata. Agents located approx. 3 pounds of methamphetamine, ¼ pound of fentanyl, and approx. $113,000 in US Currency. Agents also found paperwork identifying a storage unit that Osuna had in Mckinleyville. 

Agents authored a rollover search warrant for the storage unit on Sutter Rd. in Mckinleyville. Inside of the storage unit agents located approx. 25 pounds of methamphetamine, 5.5 pounds of cocaine, 3 pounds of heroin, and 1.5 pounds of fentanyl. 

Agents served the next search warrant on an auto body shop at Myrtle and P St. in Eureka. Agents located one ounce of cocaine and a digital scale inside of the body shop. Agents will forward charges to the district attorney for the shop owner. 

Agents served a search warrant on an apartment in the 700 block of 10th St. in Eureka. At this location agents identified the resident as the person who helps Osuna obtain vehicles and trade out vehicles on a weekly basis to help avoid detection. No drugs were located at this residence. 

Rodriguez-Alicea

The final two locations searched were neighboring apartments in the 2600 block of Boone St. in Fortuna. Agents located two firearms (one stolen), approx. 2 pounds of methamphetamine, one ounce of fentanyl, 1.5 grams of cocaine, 150 marijuana plants, 50 pounds of processed marijuana, and approx. $2500 in US Currency. The suspect at this location was not home however he has been identified as Miguel Angel Rodriguez-Alicea (34 years old). The HCDTF is asking anyone with information as to the location of Rodriguez-Alicea to contact the HCDTF or their local law enforcement agency. 

Osuna was transported to the Humboldt County Jail where he was booked for the above charges:

• 11351 H&S Possession of narcotics for sale
• 11352 H&S Transportation of narcotics for sale
• 11378 H&S Possession of methamphetamine for sale
• 11379 H&S Transportation of methamphetamine for sale
• 11366.5 H&S Maintaining or operating a drug house. 

Agents contacted a Humboldt County Superior Court Judge and had Osuna’s bail raised to $500,000. 

This was the largest one time seizure of narcotics in the history of the HCDTF. In total agents seized:

• 30 pounds of methamphetamine  
• 5.5 pounds of cocaine
• 3 pounds of heroin
• 2 pounds of fentanyl
• 150 marijuana plants
• 50 pounds of processed marijuana
• $115,500 US Currency
• 2 firearms

The HCDTF would like to thank the Fortuna Police Department for their assistance with this investigation and a special thank you to FOPD K-9 Blitz and FOPD K-9 Cain who assisted in locating the narcotics. Redwood Community Action Agency release: 

Offshore wind energy development is coming to the north coast! What comes to mind when you hear about offshore wind energy development happening in your backyard? Integral Consulting, collaborating with Redwood Community Action Agency, H.T. Harvey and Associates, and other partners, are working to empower local communities with information and tools to understand the impacts that offshore wind energy development will have. We are holding a workshop soon and hope you will participate!

This project will use community input to design digital interactive tools to help the public understand the social and environmental effects and potential conflicts of wind energy development. These community-driven tools will inform the marine renewable energy planning and development process and show possible mitigation strategies. The features of these apps will convey useful information, such as displaying areas ideal for turbine placement to reduce harm to seabirds during their migration or showing what months are best for construction to minimize impacts on marine animals. Our goal is to work with residents to develop easy-to-use digital tools that promote meaningful engagement, shared knowledge, and informed decision- making for California’s future marine renewable energy projects.

The first in a series of two workshops will be held on September 29th, 2022, at the Eureka Woman’s Club. This “CStories” workshop will explain the next steps for California offshore wind energy development, create space for conversations about this emerging development, and provide a chance to see available data and how it can be used. Input will be used to develop new interactive tools that will be shared in a follow-up workshop early in 2023. Press release from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office:

On Sept. 15, 2022, at about 12:48 p.m., a community member contacted the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Emergency Communications Center to report a suspicious device discovered on the roadside of Lucas Street, in the county’s jurisdiction of Eureka.

The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Team was dispatched to investigate. Lucas Street was temporarily closed to traffic during this incident. Through further investigation, deputies determined the suspicious object to be a live, antique military ordnance. Deputies rendered the device safe without incident.

There is no perceived threat to the public at this time.

The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind the community that if you see something suspicious or out of place in your neighborhood, do not touch or move it, but contact your local law enforcement.

It is with sadness we announce the passing of Mac Coleman.

Cameron MacGregor Coleman was born on March 30, 1978 and died August 8, 2022.

He was the much loved son of Evelyn Ley Coleman, much loved Dad to NaKaylee Coleman and the oh so much fun PopPop to grand daughter Stella Everleigh Miller.

He had family and friends where ever he went and always had fun.

He was a lifetime body builder and loved the gym and made many lifelong friends there. He had a great sense of humor that we all loved.

He leaves his mother Evelyn Ley Coleman, his daughter NaKaylee Coleman, his grand daughter Stella Miller, his uncle Bill Ley, NaKaylee’s mother Ericka Melton, and Stella’s father Tanner Miller as well as his love Hillary Larson and his dog Quinn Coleman.

His celebration of life will be Sunday, September 25, 2022 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Wharfinger Building @ #1 Marina Way Eureka, CA 95501 for anyone that knew/loved him. Come celebrate his life with us.
