Halloween encourages our wild side, peels back the layers of civilization and lets us explore our darkest feelings—our unacceptable desires (even if they are only unacceptable to ourselves).  Children, especially boys, seize this opportunity as greedily as Golem grasps the Ring.

Reveling in the chance to rampage, costumes and makeup, like alcohol give us another face behind which we can explore feelings and desires we aren’t supposed to have. If I can ever get skinny enough, I’ve got a costume stashed away to be Jessica from Who Framed Roger Rabbit?. “I’m not bad.  I’m just drawn that way.” Sexy enough to take a man to his knees but innocent of any intent to do so. Ahhhh, I can dream, can’t I?  Isn’t that what Halloween is for?
