From the Sheriff’s Office:
On 07-21-2011, approximately 6:00 p.m. Humboldt County Sheriff’s Deputies, California State Park Rangers, National Park Rangers and medical personnel responded to an assault and possible shooting in the 121400 block of U.S. 101, Orick. An investigation into the incident by responding deputies determined there had been a civil dispute over some property between a 40-year-old disabled male, and a 26-year-old male identified as Logan Wade Sperling.
Deputies determined Sperling assaulted the 40-year-old male with a garden rake and his fists. While doing so he broke the rake handle. A 55-year-old neighbor witnessed the assault and intervened on behalf of the disabled 40-year-old, shooting Sperling with a pellet gun. Sperling then assaulted the neighbor with a Tiki torch between five or six times about the head and body causing injuries.
Both Sperling and the 55-year-old neighbor were treated and released for their injuries at a local hospital. Sperling was booked into the Humboldt County Correctional Facility for assault with a deadly weapon and is still in custody. His bail is set at $50,000.00.
