Former Eureka Police Chief Garr Nielsen, who was unceremoniously fired on Friday, spoke with KSLG’s John Matthews this morning. Nielsen talked about a “small contigent” of “well-connected” EPD officers – “tough cops” – who opposed him and, from his point of view, eventually succeeded in getting him fired. Also: the strange experience of being tailed by a private investigator while in service in Eureka, and his hope that the reforms he instituted within the department will continue.

Overall, he sounded pretty sincerely equanimous about the whole thing. Audio here:

As reported last night, Nielsen supporters – among them, City Councilmember Linda Atkins – do not seem inclined to take the action as lightly. They will be gathering at the corner of 15th and California Saturday at noon to begin circulating a petition calling for the firing of City Manager Dave Tyson.
