Photo of the North Pass Fire by Matthew Henderson
UPDATE 6:30 8/30: 34,308 acres and 37% contained.
The North Pass fire east of Covelo continues to eat up acreage. The incident is now estimated at 32,675 acres and is only 35% contained. Over 1800 personnel are struggling to control the blaze which was started by lightning August 18th.
Four residences and seven outbuildings have been consumed and sixty-four residences, five comercial properties and further sixty-five outbuildings are threatened.
The wind has changed and smoke is blowing inland. Covelo, of course, has an air quality alert but, around noon today, Willits’ air quality was rated as unhealthy and inland Mendocino has been issued an alert. Heavy smoke is reported in Ukiah as well as Willits.
Local people are saddened by the fact that the area of Hatchet Mountain “where the snow doesn’t stick” and which is the subject of local ghost stories burned yesterday.
