Think about it: It would take an act of supreme artistic alchemy to transform Humboldt State’s Student Business Services Building — that squat, miserable structure plopped in the middle of the parking lot — into a thing of grace.
But the HSU Madrigal Singers accomplished just that yesterday afternoon in an end-of-term Christmas concert for the benighted wage slaves forever trapped inside that abomination. The video at right doesn’t come near doing it justice, of course, but watch it anyway and try to feel that whole central atrium, which runs up from the second floor to the fourth, ringing and shimmering like the inside of a Steinway.
The Madrigal Singers closed out the set with their rendition of “Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer.” Kidding!
