Pre S.: I forgot to mention that today was the last day to file. So that’s it: It’s Bohn v. Seidner v. Annete De Modena, the latter of whom has garnered very little mindshare. (Oops, I was unintentionally right the first time. Thanks, Jim.)

Well, well, well! Now, isn’t this interesting?

The Humboldt County Elections Office confirms that Cheryl Seidner — a former HSU employee and Wiyot Tribal Chair and still a very highly regarded figure in local political circles — has taken on the unenviable task of attempting to chase Rex Bohn in this season’s race to replace retiring First District Supervisor Jimmy Smith.

A bunch of potential Bohn-crushers entered and exited the rumor mill these last few months: Patty Berg, Mel Krebs, Greg Conners. Seidner’s name only reached my ears today, and in some ways this makes for the most intriguing possible race. A descendant of an Indian Island Massacre survivor, Seidner is pretty universally respected and esteemed. She led the Wiyot Tribe during the time when it was winning the island back from the city of Eureka. At the same time, she’s never really taken any high-profile positions in politics outside that one. No one has much reason to hate her.

You can bet this is going to energize the Humboldt County left o’ center, big-time. Will that be enough? We’ll see — Rex Bohn is way, way ahead in fundraising and mindshare, but Seidner is a pretty tough candidate to go negative against.
