Early this morning, shortly after midnight the residents of Henderson center near Carson Park were awakened by a loud crash. With memories of the truck that crashed through the fence at Carson Park on the corner of Buhne and I Streets still fresh from a few months ago, I decided to pull on my sweats and sneakers and investigate. It didn’t take me long to find it since I could see the lights of the emergency vehicles flashing over from H Street. Apparently a single car with a single driver traveling south on H Street at a high rate of speed crashed into a power pole, splitting it in half, and continued thorough the chain-link fence and shrubs. The vehicle came to rest facing northbound in the park just off the sidewalk. Amazingly the driver, while appearing dazed by the crash, seemed fairly uninjured. Eureka PD closed H Street between Buhne and Carson
Half the power pole with a street light attached, remains dangling in the air, suspended by the electric wires it once supported. Although the neighborhood didn’t loose power from the wreck, it is assumed that PG&E will need to shut the power down for a while to make the repair. Those living in the general vicinity may want to set a backup alarm, I have. Updates expected later this morning.
UPDATE:
Shortly after I posted this story, PG&E cut the power to begin repairs. 63 households in the area are effected. PG&E is reporting that power should be restored by 8am this morning. H Street remains closed between Buhne and Carson during the repairs.
