Press release from Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office:

On 07-17-2013, approximately 4:00 p.m. the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office received a call from a McKinleyville man who said he was the boyfriend of a 31 year old Eureka woman. He told the dispatcher he just received a text from his girlfriend who was threatening to commit suicide by jumping off a cliff. The boyfriend believed she was heading to the Table Bluff-South Jetty area and requested law enforcement check for her. He provided a vehicle description.

A deputy responded to the South Jetty area and located the female’s unoccupied vehicle backed against the edge of Table Bluff. The deputy exited her patrol car and checked the vehicle. After locating no one inside the deputy began to search the area on foot. Approximately ten minutes later the deputy located the female sitting in a tree which was overhanging a steep ledge on the bluff. The deputy spoke with the female and persuaded her to come down from the tree. After the female exited the tree, she started walking towards the deputy while sticking her hands in her pockets. The deputy told the female to remove her hands from her pockets which she did. The deputy determined the female needed mental health assistance and attempted to handcuff the female, at which point the female became combative with the deputy. A struggled ensued with both the deputy and the female ending up on the ground. The boyfriend of the female showed up at the scene and attempted to assist the deputy with taking the female into custody. A California Highway Officer also arrived and assisted the deputy with taking the female into custody. When the female was searched a folding knife was located in her pocket where her hand had been. An ambulance was summoned to the scene and transported the female to a local hospital for treatment.

The deputy and female were uninjured. No criminal charges are being sought.
