Humboldt Bay Fire Press Release:
On July 23, 2013 at 7:15 A.M. an engine from Humboldt Bay Fire responded to a reported investigation of smoke in the area at the Foot of T Street in Eureka. While enroute the engine reported a large column of smoke was visible. The engine arrived on scene and discovered a large transient camp on fire. It was approximately 100 feet by 75 feet with multiple encampments burning. An additional engine and two Chief Officers responded. Multiple five gallon propane tanks were discovered to be burning in the area. Firefighters pulled back and fought the fire from a distance initially.
The Port of Humboldt Bay Fire Boat arrived on scene and assisted with fire operations. The boat had better access and allowed for a large volume of water to be used without putting firefighters at risk of the propane cylinders exploding. The fire boat had the fire controlled within about 10 minutes. Firefighters on handlines then entered the area and searched for victims and extinguished remaining hotspots.
Humboldt Bay Fire would like to encourage citizens to notify the fire department of unattended campfires. These fires often escape and lead to larger fires in the area.
