From the Arcata Police Department:

The Arcata Police Department is currently conducting theft sting operations in various neighborhoods throughout the city. “Bait” vehicles are parked in neighborhoods where vehicle burglaries have recently occurred. Items such as backpacks, laptop computers and outdoor equipment are left in plain view in the vehicle. Surveillance officers are stationed nearby in unmarked vehicles. They observe the vehicles watching for would-be thieves. When a subject is observed entering the vehicle, officers respond and take the subject into custody for vehicle burglary.

The APD has had great success in the past with similar operations. If you see suspicious subjects in your neighborhood, please call the APD immediately at 822-2428.
