Press release from College of the Redwoods:
A College of the Redwoods student was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon by Humboldt County Sheriff’s deputies Thursday, Nov. 21 after allegedly attacking his roommate with a guitar.
According to Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Mike Fridley, there may have been an argument between the two male CR students and residence hall roommates. The suspect allegedly hit the victim in the head with a guitar. The incident took place at approximately 11:35 a.m.
Fridley said the suspect left the area with the guitar. He later returned to his room. The guitar was recovered. CR Security personnel escorted Sheriff’s Department deputies to his room and arrested him.
The victim was taken to St. Joseph’s for treatment in the emergency room and was reported in stable condition by the hospital.
The suspect was in custody Thursday at the Humboldt County Correctional Facility.
CR Lead Safety Officer George Kapitan said any kind of assault in the College’s residence halls is extremely rare.
“This is obviously a very unfortunate event,” said CR President Kathy Smith. “We are first and foremost concerned for the well-being of the student victim. We are working with the law enforcement authorities and through our college processes.”
