Caltrans Press Release:
Caltrans has granted an encroachment permit to the Weott Community Services District for a water pipeline repair project that will temporarily close State Highway 254, also known as the Avenue of the Giants, from just north of Burlington State Campground to just south of Newton Road beginning at 7 a.m., Monday, December 2. The full closure is estimated to remain in effect through the project’s estimated completion time of 6 p.m., Friday, December 13.
This emergency project will replace a broken pipe owned and operated by the Weott Community Services District. The pipeline transports water from the intake site at the Eel River to a treatment plant which produces drinking water for the community of Weott, for a portion of Humboldt Redwoods State Park, and for the Weott CAL FIRE station.
Businesses on Route 254/Avenue of the Giants in both Weott and Myers Flat will remain accessible during the highway closure. Motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians will still be able to access Humboldt Redwoods State Park both north and south of the closure, but no through traffic will be permitted at the closure area during the project. A detour around the work site is available by using US Highway 101 from Weott to Myers Flat.
The contractor for the project is Apex Directional Drilling of Portland. All work is weather dependent and subject to change. Please use caution when driving in the area and remember to Slow for the Cone Zone.
